Basic Information Cheontae is the Korean descendant of the Chiese Buddhist school Tiantai. Tiantai was introduced to Korea a couple of times during earlier periods, but was not firmly established until the time of Uicheon (1055-1101) who established Cheontae in Goryeo as an independent school.
About the founder
의천[義天(1055∼1101)] Uicheon He was a monk in the middle era of Goryeo period and found Cheontae buddhism 의천[義天(1055∼1101)]. His last name was 왕씨(王氏) and his name 후(煦). He was also known as Eu sae 우세(祐世) and Dae Kak Keuk Sa대각국사(大覺國師)
He was born in Kyeong Gi Do Gae Seung. His father being the 11th king of the Goryeo Moon Jong and his mother being In Yae Wang Hoo 이씨(仁睿王后李氏). He was the Moon Jong’s fourth son and was called by his father when he was 11 years old with his brothers and was asked “Which one of you want to be a Bok Jeon.” and he volunteered to do it and went out the castle. Bok Jeon means a person who goes around and get the Buddha’s wisdom... In 1065, having 경덕국사(景德國師) as his mentor, he studied at 영통사(靈通寺) and at October of that year, he got 구족계(具足戒) from 불일사(佛日寺)
Main Belief Cheontae Buddhism’s main belief and goal was too mix Kyo Jong and Seon Jong together. Becoming a 일심삼관 Il Sim Sam Kwan.
It is studying of a good deed and being enlighted by understanding Kyong Jon. Seon Jong is being enlighted by carrying out the good deed physically. 일심삼관 Il Sim Sam Kwan is being in the position of being knowledgeable after knowing that 공(空), 가(假), 중(中) is in the each of the other two principles and call this 삼제원융(三諦圓融) and 관(觀)ing this is called Il Sim Sam Kwan

The three circles each means that 우주만법(宇宙萬法) is composed of 공(空), 가(假), 중(中) and the golden 금강저 Keum Kang Jeu is a weapon that 금강신장 used.
The golden stuff represents the wisdom of Buddha that rejects bad things and enforces good things 정법(正法). The weapon is used by 금강신장(金剛神將). The blueness of the circles mean that we, Korea, is in the South East Asia and that it is advancing. The reason that Keum Kang Jo 금강저is gold is to represent that Buddha’s saying the guide to right path.
소의경전 So Eu Kyung Jun (sacred text) A book that the monks or buddhist people use to study the Buddhism. Is composed of 28 parts and is thought to have the words of Buddha.
